This story from CNET News on Friday exposes that the FBI, that manufacturer of fake terrorist plots, is in the process of drafting a proposed law (can they do that?) that would require “that social-networking Web sites and providers of VoIP, instant messaging, and Web e-mail alter their code to ensure their products are wiretap-friendly.”
The argument for even more invasive surveillance of innocent citizens has been discussed by all the usual suspects; the White House, U.S. senators, and the FBI. The reasoning will of course hinge on the notion that the government agents of force can’t wiretap enough Americans suspected of illegal activities. Those activities were not defined.
Any new law to this effect would amend the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, or CALEA. Those laws apply only to telecommunications providers, but since more and more Americans are using the Web, the proposed solution would include almost all forms of communications. This is just another attempted tyrannical advancement against freedom and privacy by the state.
The FBI’s legislation has already been approved by the Department of Justice, (imagine that) and if passed of course, would be instrumental in the FBI’s efforts to catch “terrorists and criminals.” The only thing left out is that in order for the FBI to be able to catch more “terrorists and criminals,” it will first have to create them!
Oh what a tangled web they weave in order to fool and deceive: Us that is!
